Respnse

Unfortunately on Mr. Wright's pack-in wilderness hunt, we got hammered with snow. We packed in on Friday and the season opened on Saturday. The forecast was for 1 day of snow (Sunday) so we went high. Instead, it snowed for three solid days (Sun-Tues). By the time the snow quit, there was no time to move as the season is only five days. It was an upslope storm (from the east) so the snow was just as deep at mid elevations. The elk just weren't moving because of the blizzard conditions. I can't be held responsible for bad weather forecasts. Mr. Wright should have talked to me before posting his report as maybe I could have explained wilderness logistics to him and the faulty forecast. It takes a whole day to move to a lower camp and we ran out of time. Perhaps we could have worked something out for another hunt but he blew it now. He never said anything to me before he left. Actually, elk tags in my areas have been cut the last few years and the herd is on an upswing. My hunters take some of the best bulls in Colorado and I will standby my longterm record. Weather can make or break any hunt.

I went on this hunt with high expectations based on the Colorado outfitter ass. trophy contest results from previous years. Comanche Wilderness placed very well in a lot of categories with impressive photographs. We received a lot of snow on our hunt and the elk apparently moved to lower ground. However we did not, and were never given the option. I never saw the first elk. Our guide also told us (after several frustrating days into the hunt, with no sign) that the elk population had been declining in unit 19 for years. I enjoyed the experience of the big outdoors but spent a substantial amount of money on an outfitter with no back up plan.

Alberta Hunting Information

Alberta is a large, diverse province with rolling prairies, farmland, river bottoms, Boreal forests, and large expanses of the northern Rocky Mountains. Many species of big game, waterfowl, upland game and predators inhabit Alberta. Long known for monster whitetails, Alberta also is home to big mule deer, pronghorn antelope, elk, black bear, cougar, Canada moose, and bighorn sheep. In fact, 7 of the 10 largest bighorn sheep in Boone and Crockett record book are from Alberta. In addition to big game, Alberta offers some top notch bird hunting. Serious waterfowlers know about the large flocks of ducks and geese that call Alberta home or migrate through.
