New Mexico Elk

Elk hunting is never easy. It's great to find and hunt with an outfitter who is located in a top trophy area, has great guides, nice accomodations and plenty of good food. Black Mountain Outfitters, owned by Tom McReynolds is just such a place. I had a great time bowhunting with veteran guide Mike Graves and took my best bull to date, a 329 on day 5 of a 7 day hunt. You will hunt by calling, spot and stalk and sitting waterholes. The guides are very careful not to bust the elk and run them out of the country. I really liked that approach. The terrain is moderate for elk so just about anyone can handle this hunt. Know that you will spend a lot of time in a truck because these units are big. In my opinion, this is a really good operation.

Reviewer Comments: Tom the owner works hard and is personable. He simply over hyped the hunt in terms of expected opportunities. Where we hunted in Area 13 had heavy public pressure, one guide did a locater bugle and successfully called in 5 other public archery hunters. In 2009 Tom had zero success in the first hunt, one small 5x5 in the second and one wounded 5x5 in the third hunt. I was told that we could expect 40 to 50 % success in an average year and 20 to 30% success in a poor year. I asked a guide after we had had several days of no elk, and he said they averaged 10 to 20% and less than 10% success in a poor year. I was not able to talk to the hunters in the first group, but in the second & third groups there were several hunters who did not even nock an arrow except over water waiting for an opportunity after 6 days of hunting hard. The entire hunt failed to meet or come close to expectations.

Arizona Hunting Information

Arizona has lots of trophy big game but is probably best known for its trophy elk and mule deer. This partially due to the limited number of tags available.

Quebec Hunting Information

Quebec is probably best know as an excellent caribou hunting destination. Hunters from across the globe travel to Quebec to hunt their big Quebec-Labrador caribou migration. In addition to caribou hunting, Quebec offers black bears, Canada moose and whitetails.

British Columbia Hunting Information

British Columbia is an excellent hunting destination that offers a wide variety of game species. Vast wilderness areas and pristine coastlines provide world class adventure hunting for those seeking that trip of a lifetime. BC is arguably best known for big coastal black bears, Canada moose, grizzly bear, mountain lion, Dall sheep and Stone sheep. Hunters can book a hunt with an outfitter and avoid the license drawing process common in most U.S. states.
