I've hunted with Mark Smith of Bowhunt West KY Outfitters the last four seasons with friends. At least five of the eight have hunted multiple times with Mark and five of us have taken deer with one guy scoring both times down on very nice deer. We are from the overly crowded and terribly mismanaged state of Michigan so seeing bucks is a real treat! We hunted the early season opener in Kentucky our first trip down and being from Michigan the mid September heat was a bit much and although we did not connect we did see some decent deer. Mark was gracious engough to invite us back due to the the heat and nasty rain so we decided on early December. This proved to teach us that a second rut truly exists in a well managed state as we heard more grunting and saw more chasing than any of us ever witnessed in Michigan's November rut! Two out of the four of us harvested nice trophies that December. Aside from the mid-September hunt we've bowhunted the first and second week of November the last three years and seen our fair share of mature bucks participating in rutting activity. Unfortunately we had more than one 140/150ish inch deer hanging up out of bow range on more than one occassion. As I mentioned, I have hunted with Mark since '07, and although I have shot only one buck I have passed on several bucks each and every year as well as actually missed a nice deer this past season due to operator error and regretfully passed up a nice nine point last year! This hunt is booked as a fully guided hunt but once you are shown your stands you are responsible for getting to them and all stands are easily accessed via glow pins. Most of the stands are high quality hang on stands with climbing sticks but Mark does have plenty of nice one or two person ladder stands available at most farms and will walk you in if you prefer. The accomodations are new as our first hunt in 2007 was the opener of the new lodge which is equipped with eight bedrooms, six bathrooms and two laundry rooms with both washer and dryer in each as well as a huge kitchen and TV area in the center. The bedrooms hold between 3 and 4 hunters in each. Anyone from Michigan will observe a different breed of deer they aren't used to seeing at home, the quality of deer are great. The largest I have seen is 196" which was taken in late September and I have seen several 130-140" deer. Mark and his crew will work their hardest to get you on deer. They are very experienced bowhunters and know how to get you close. They spend countless hours scouting and planting food plots and work endless hours on keeping the deer on the leases. The cost of the hunts are as reasonable as you will find and the deer are as good as anywhere in the Midwest! You book with Bowhunt West KY Outfitters and happen to get lucky early, depending on the time of year you chose to hunt you may have an opportunity to also hunt many of the other game species that are frequently seen. We've seen countless flocks of turkey close enough to drop a stick on as well as coyote and bobcat which my group has now seen six bobcat that would have been easy shots in season... Good luck!
