Bear Hunt

My wife and I have hunted with Shane in June 2015 and May 2016. Both were bear hunts. Shane's tent camp is clean and comfortable and sits right along the river. Camp food is good quality and abundant. Horses are calm and easy to ride. Terrain is easy to ride, no bad cliffs, good trails. Bear hunts are with bait. Our first hunt in 2015 did not produce a bear large enough for what I wanted so I passed. Shane worked hard to get us on a bigger bear but it didn't work out. We returned to his camp in 2016 and the first day I passed on a black bear. The second day of our hunt we examined the same bear and I decided to take him. Result: 5'11" back bear with excellent hide. No rub marks, nice for a rug or full mount. We took the meat and it is excellent. The reason we like Shane is that he is honest and runs a safe, clean camp and hunt. He knows his territory. No guide can guarantee an animal but Shane gets you in to different areas and works hard.

Outfitter Response: Best hunters ever !!

stay away

15 years ago this may have been a good place to go hunting but not anymore. we hunted the high elevations from horse back. we started at base camp and split into 4 groups of 2 and went to four different spike camps. out of the 8 people in camp nobody fired a shot or even saw an animal worth shooting and all of us had buck and bull tags. the guide that we had was friendly but admitted to us that there hadnt been many elk there since 2000 because of the wolves. we saw 6 cow elk in the first four days and then on last day we saw a herd of about 20 with mostly cows, calf and 2 spikes. the horses were in poor shape which meant we had to walk about half of the time because they couldnt handle it. i dont like putting people down but i also dont want to see anyone else spend 5000 dollars to be so completly dissapointed as i was.

Outfitter Response: We have good camps, good food, good horses and good country. You do not buy and Elk from a outfitter, you buy a hunt. If you do not come prepared for a rugged hunt, you will not be successful at it.

Reviewer Comments: I am a hunting consultant at www.steveshunts.com and we book hunts for Shane at Castle Creek Outfitters near Salmon, Idaho. They have the state's best trophy whitetail hunt in November with muzzleloaders (scopes legal) on a HAM hunt. We only had one hunter in 2000 and he scored on a 168 5/8 typical 14 point buck that weighed 300 pounds (est.)the second day of his hunt. We have had excellent luck with the outfitter - call me at 1-800-303-1304 for details on this hunt.
