Awlful Hog Hunt

If you’re going hog hunting, don’t go here. Extremely unprofessional management. Owner’s son drives like a maniac, swears like a sailor, and lounges all over the place where paying customers hang out. Also informed that he has shot close to 30 hogs out there this year and with close to 20 guys on our hunt and almost 80 hunts, we only killed 3. Maybe if your killing so many you should leave some for the paying customers. He was also out spot lighting at night in areas where we were hunting in the morning. Stands had trash all around them. A few guys sat on the ground in pop-up chairs with log trees as shooting rests. Before you go out for your hunt you will get honeybuns, pecan swirls, and cheesecake danishes that you would get from a gas station. Could go on and on but figured this should paint a clear enough picture. This place is a joke! Don’t waste your money.

My father and I went on our second paid hunt this pass December. Although the first one was pretty bad, this one was the worst! We bought our trip to Great Southern Outdoors Plantation last March at the Louisiana Sportsman Show in Gonzales. The weather was perfect, you couldn't have asked for anything better. Our first hunt, we sat in a little box stand that was a tight squeeze for the two of us. We then again hunted out that same stand the next hunt and still didn't see any deer. The next three hunts were HORRIBLE! We were put behind two trees with branches in the front of it and we sat in camping chairs. Nothing was on side of us nor behind us, leaving us in the open for all the animals to see. We saw two little does through out the whole trip. There were 12 hunters with us that week and there were only 4 does killed and 1 hog. Everyone paid $1700 to kill 1 buck, 2 does, and 2 hogs. Two shootable bucks were seen and thats it. The sad part about it is when my dad booked the hunt, Rex said he would personally bring us to our stand. He never stepped foot in the woods with us, instead he had a 22 year old young man take us. So if he promises you something, don't count on it, nothing but lies. All he wants is your money.

Great Southern Outdoors

This was the worst hunt ever, I would never go back. I saw two deer the whole time. I went with my father and his friend Doug. They saw four deer each and no shooters. There was a total of 11 hunters 2 doe where killed and illegal buck 6 point so that guy got charged $500 more. Rex is the owner and was our guide, he started drinking alcohol at 4:15am and didnt have a clue about hunting. All he wanted to know is how we heard about there plantation and how his web-site was. He put no time into scouting and his stands where the cheapest stands you can buy. You look directly into the sun in most of his stands or you are sitting right in the open. the other 3 guides where kids that couldnt even find the stands. on the last day Rex decides to put my father in a different group of guys, how rude is that. I will tell as many people as I can on how Rex Prichett is all about the money and doesnt care about the hunters he brings in.

Reviewer Comments: This was the worst hunt of my life, the owner who was also our guide was only worried about how to advertise and how his web-site was. He started drinking alcohol at 4:15am. He put no time in scouting and the stands where horrible. They where very low, facing the sun, so you could see but the deer could see you. There was 11 guys hunting and we got two does and not one of us saw a shooter buck. I went down with my father and his friend. we were there three days and the last day Rex decides to put my father in a different group of guys. I saw two deer the whole time, my father saw four deer and Doug saw three or four. I will never go back, I will tell as many people as I can how bad it was and how he is only about getting the money and not taking care of the hunter.

Reviewer Comments: Have hunted at Great Southern for the last 5 years. On my first trip to the Plantation I harvest a respectfull 8 Point Buck with 16" spread. Rex Pritchet Owner / Guide went out of his way to make sure I had a successful Hunt, as he has everytime I visited this wonderful Plantation. The very same morning I harvested the 8 point I saw 10 racked Bucks in one Green Field, with one approaching 200 inches in size. Rex told me exactly where to be watching for this behometh. Long story short I missed ! My fault not Rex's, you can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink it. Since that first trip I have seen several trophy Bucks at this Plantation. Hit one with a 250 yard shot, very large buck, but lost him due to severe strom that moved through area after my shot. Rex has put me on several deer at the Plantation 2 of them last year. The first one was on my first trip into the field, been on the stand 2 hours, Big Buck appears, I miss ! Again !! 2nd day Rex carry's me to my stnad, been on the stand 1 hour, Big Buck appears, I Miss ! Again !! Both shots were at less than 100 yards, adrenalin level , very high, if you don't get the excitement out of the Hunt then why Hunt ?

Reviewer Comments: As previously referenced, the accommodations, food and drink, and support staff (cooks/housekeeping) at GSO were exceptional. There were several individuals that certainly went out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay. However, when it got down to hunting in the truest sense, the owner and his “guides” don’t have a clue. Stand placement often times wasn’t complimentary to the prevailing winds and my family repeatedly noticed stand locations that were EXCESSIVELY hunted. This was confirmed by the various candy wrappers, scent wicks, cover scent / attractant bottles, numerous cigarette butts, toilet paper, and various piles of human feces in and around stand locations. Prior to booking this hunt (June 2005), my cousin and I flew from Northern Kentucky to GSO to check the facility out in person. We were specifically told that due to the strict adherence to the number of hunters permitted at GSO, stand locations were most often times “ONLY HUNTED ONCE A YEAR” unless otherwise requested by the respective hunter/customer. This is certainly not the case. Also, I personally had the owner, Mr. Rex Pritchett; take me to and from various stand locations during our stay. While doing so, he often took the liberty to smoke while in the vehicle. As most people know, that is not conducive to good deer hunting, especially when stand placement is off. In addition, during the stay, respectful, yet clear requests were made by my family to possibly remedy the situation. On the last morning of the hunt, the owner, Mr. Pritchett, attempted to place me in a climber that was to be placed ON A HIGH VOLTAGE POWER LINE POLE. Not in an adjacent tree line, but the pole itself. This was also during a storm front with heavy rain, and yes, LIGHTENING. I’m confident the power company would be as entertained as my family was with such a request. If you have any questions, please call as needed. Happy hunting!

Reviewer Comments: I’ll keep it short. Throughout the hunt (Jan 26 – 29, 2006), my family and I noticed numerous cigarette butts, candy and snack wrappers, human feces, scent wicks, and a plethora of cover scents and attractants in and around our stand locations. This is at a place that apparently prides itself in very limited hunting pressure. The best is when you have the “plantation owner”, Rex Pritchett, smoking like a steel plant in the vehicle that he transports customers to/from their stands. This isn’t very conducive to good deer hunting or “a true southern experience”. If you have any questions, you may contact me 859.380.5358.

Reviewer Comments: This is my second trip to G.S.O. My first trip was in January, during the rut, I saw lots of bucks, they were just too far for a shot, tons of does, bobcat, and coyotes. My second trip was in November, opening day. It was real warm and the animals just weren't moving. I didn't see a buck the whole 5 days, but my husband saw 15 bucks all at once!! He got a nice buck and a hog. I got a hog also and was thrilled with it since I live in Maine and that is what I wanted to get. My husband and I fell in love with the people that run this outfit, they are extremely nice and really want you to get a buck. We will go back.

Utah Hunting Information

Utah has recently been outstanding for trophy elk, but the best tags take many years to draw. Utah does have conservation tags available for purchase that allow hunters to bypass the drawing. Given the high demand for these premium tags prices can be high. In the past Utah has been a top trophy mule deer state but recently only a handful of units consistently produce B&C caliber deer.
