Mule Deer Hunt
Nice accommodations and friendly people. The hunt was not as organized as other hunts I have been on. Much more walking that I was expecting at high elevations. There were too many hunters in the woods around us since the land was not private land. If you are looking for spectacular views, good food, good accommodations and like to see the mountains from horseback -- this is a great place to be. Better for Elk than Mule Deer the year I went.

Muzzy hunt
Hunt was great, we saw around 12 different bucks. Three of them were very nice. However the terrain is so rugged and nasty its very difficult to get near the big boys. We didnt get any shots at the big ones. Saw elk, goats and bears, and lots of hikers. The wall tent was in good condition and spacious. Overall a 10/10 for physical challenge.

Mule Deer
Excellent athletic hunt with guides that were gentlemen and did everything possible to put me in a position for a shot. Camp equipment, livestock and food was first class.

Grabbing air
Hard hunt for anyone coming from sea level. Base camp was at 9400 feet. We hunted up from there as there was little or no game below. All elk were killed between 10500 & 11700 feet according to our garmin Rhino 530 gps. You have to hunt hard and be willing to go higher. we sAW ELK OVER 13000 feet we could not get to. Need heavy storm to bring them down. We went on a meet hunt. We killed 3 elk in 5 days. Biggest barley went 300. the other 2 were raghorns. We had 4 buck tags and did not see one buck in 7 days (includes the ride in and out. Wranglers were quasie guides but were great guys. Our main outfitter needs to work on better horses, gear & bedside manners. for the record, I carry a string of horses and have packed myself for 37 years so I do know what Im talking about. These guys are eager to learn and were open to being taught new tricks. I'll give them another shot as they try hard.

Good Outfit
Contacted Dwight Cox late in the booking season, looking for a drop camp elk archery hunt. Dwight not only was able to help me but was able to move around his typical dates for each hunt to enable my hunting partner and myself to hunt in the limited timeframe my buddy had prior to his transfer out of country. While neither of us were successful in our pursuit we both saw elk almost every day and had we been hunting with rifles instead of bows the success pertange could certainly have been different. The hunt my buddy and I undertook was a self guided drop camp type hunt. I would urge anyone considering a hunt in this area to be sure and start walking/running/exercising prior to heading up as the elevation is fairly high (9500'-11,000') and can be pretty steep in areas but certainly nothing that most folks coupldn't handle. Beautiful country, had aspens going through the change from grren to gold right outside the door of the tent. I would certainly consider and am considering booking another hunt with Dwight and Outwest Guides and think you couldn't go wrong with him and his associates.

OutWest Guide Hunt
OutWest Guide provides a great service. The staff is knowledgeable about the terrain and patterning the animals. The drop camps are well situated and stocked, and the trail rides to/from on well mannered horses. The country (Elk Mountain, just west of Aspen, CO near the little town of Marble)is magnificent elk country for every season. We hunted 3rd season in '12, which was unseasonably warm with daytime temps in the 70's. elk sign everywhere, but we didn't see anything until day 5, when we bagged a cow. Public land, but with limited access. Rough country, so don't attempt it unless you are in shape and ready pushing through thick stuff at 10,000+ feet. Didn't see another hunter for the entire trip. Short answer: highly recommend Dwight at OutWest.

Outwest Guides
I have hunted with Outwest Guides for early season, high country muzzleloader muleys three times now. Each time they have done a good job with their camps, horses and overall accommodations. This trip, our guide Dan, worked hard to help me and my hunting buddy Steve try to locate a shooter buck. Based on past experiences we were defining shooter as 180+ and truly hoping for 200. Unfortunately the effects of the hard winter of 2007 can still be seen. We saw a lot less deer overall and only two bucks in the 180 range, nothing in that top end 200 range. We hunted hard, covering over 40 miles on horseback in 6 days. We had a fun trip overall and saw some elk and mountain goats along the way. We saw some of the most beautiful mountain country you will ever see. I have no gripes with the outfitter, they did their part but the big bucks just weren't there.

2006 High Country Muley
Booked a semi-guided muzzleloader mule deer hunt. This was basically a drop-camp with horses. Packed in the day before the opener. Had an awesome horseback ride through the Colorado high country. Camp was in good shape and consisted of a wall-ten set-up just below treeline at around 10,000ft. Food was good and Dwight, the camp hand was an experienced hunter and all around good guy. We saw a few bucks on the way in and a handful of elk that evening. Glassed hard and were fortunate to find a monster buck on day two, but I just couldn't get on him. We found him again the next morning and I was able to close the distance to 115yds after a tough stalk. The shot was good and he went down in sight. The staff at Outwest Guides have some great country to hunt and did everything they said they would do. I had a great hunt and took a tremendous buck, 9x7 and 32" outside, grossed 214".

2007 High Country Muley
Booked a second early season muzzleloader hunt in the high country with this outfitter. This time around I wanted to hunt both muleys and elk. Camp was a wall-tent already set up and equipped with the basic equipment. We brought our own food. The horseback ride in was great. We spotted several bucks the day before the opener including one that looked to be a shooter but was pretty far off. We found that buck on opening day and I decided to make a stalk. The tough part was this buck was about 1,500+ feet above us feeding. The stalk took over 6hours but I was able to get within 80 yards and made the shot. I am so glad I got into great shape before this trip. I was beat by the time I got back to camp that evening. The buck was 27" wide and grossed 172". My buddy Steve had several stalks and one opportunities but wasn't able to close the deal. Stalking in the highcountry isnt as easy as it looks. Unfortunatly we saw only a couple of elk and no bulls at all. This was the most disappointing part of the hunt. Overall the guys at OutWest Guides did a real good job for us.
