Species Hunted: Hog

Game Quality: N/A

Accommodation Quality: Good

Camp Condition: Good

Food Quality: very good

Guide Experience: good

Other Personal Experience: good

Overall Impression: fair - to -good

Recommend: Maybe

Reviewer Comments: Hugh is more interested in the bird and deer as they for whatever reason seem to hold his interest more than hogs. The hogs seemed like a necessary evil that comes with the territory. First time there we saw plenty of sign, but weather once again (lots of wind) plagued our hunting in Texas. Hunts on over 10,000 acres of leased land. Personality doesn't make an outfitter good or bad, but does go a long way in developing client relations and repeat business. Hugh needs a little work here, he seemed aloof and difficult to communicate with. His dad who was helping him was a gem. He was not particularily accomadating given the second chance when we tried to work in a hunt on the only weekend we had available. Made us feel some what unwanted and we were going to be a repeat client. Pricing has increased since we last went and when we compared to what we were going to pay for his hog hunt versus others, he seemed to be on the top side (although he now lets you take 3 hogs instead of 2). If budget hog hunting is what you are after, look elsewhere. If lots of opportunity on a vast spread with good accomadations and food are all in your budget, he might fit into your plans.

Reviewer Comments: If you would like to hunt with a person who has no personality, just call Hugh Starr. If mircowave biscuits and breakfast pizza he is the man to call. The only enjoyment of the trip was talking with his father. There was another man in camp with us he did not see anything but a very very small 7point, he did not kill anything. He was not asked to come back or any money refunded.Every gate that was opened was opened by my dad who was also hunting. The first night we did not get back to camp until 11:00 pm, because we where pushing a atv out of the mud that Hugh's father got stuck.Check out time was at 8:00 am but Hugh rushed out at 6:00am so we would not have a chance to speak with the other hunters that had just arrived at camp, He didn't want them to know how much this trip sucked and the money they were about to throw away.

Species Hunted: Whitetail

Game Quality: Great

Accommodation Quality: Very Clean

Camp Condition: Great

Food Quality: Great

Guide Experience: Very Good

Other Personal Experience: N/A

Overall Impression: The Best Hunt I've Been On

Recommend: YES!!!

Reviewer Comments: 5th year hunting in a row! This was the best hunt I have been on. I killed a 159 1/8B&C 12 point and saw 3 good shooters. My dad killed a good 9 point that was a real good deer. Another hunter killed a 21" plus 8 with 10 " tines a real bruiser. Should have had 2 more bucks but had 2 guys from South Carolina that could not shoot(Lost both deer from gut shot). This is a free range hunt with some really big bucks.

Species Hunted: Turkey

Game Quality: Poor

Accommodation Quality: Fair

Camp Condition: Fair

Food Quality: Poor

Guide Experience: Poor

Other Personal Experience: Fair

Overall Impression: SAD

Recommend: Not in my wildest dreams!!

Reviewer Comments: I have hunted turkey on several occasions and this was by far the worst hunt of my entire life. The owner Hugh Star has the personality of a goat. I am not a pickey person but a glass of ice was way too much to ask for after a hot day of hunting!! Also don't think about using the telephone...because that is out of the question (even if there is a death in the family) Save your money check out another outfitter!!

Species Hunted: whitetail deer

Game Quality: great

Accommodation Quality: good and clean

Camp Condition: good

Food Quality: great

Guide Experience: very good

Other Personal Experience: they know their stuff

Overall Impression: great hunt

Recommend: YES!! already have

Reviewer Comments: I did not kill this year but did have chances. Of 5 people 2 real good deer were killed a 20 1/2" 9 point and 19 3/4" 10. This is not a can hunt and you could go home empty handed! If you are a hunter you will understand. They do everything in there power for you to harvest a deer. This was my 5th year hunting with them and already booked for next year. Good hunting

Species Hunted: Rio Grande Turkeys

Game Quality: Okay

Accommodation Quality: moderate

Camp Condition: okay

Food Quality: fine

Guide Experience: overrated

Other Personal Experience: not applicable

Overall Impression: happy to be home

Recommend: no

Reviewer Comments: I was successful in taking my two longbeards on this hunt, but the outfitter was arrogant and overbearing. A hunter from Pennsylvania (police officer) had taken his "first" turkey ever, was delighted to have it, and was even going to have it mounted. It was a jake. The outfitter gathered all the hunters together and chastised and belittled this poor guy for taking a jake. I knew something was wrong when we arrived and he demanded his money up front, even before we unpacked, and then proceded to inform us that the kitchen was off limits to the hunters. The turkey hunt was advertised as a turkey, hog, and bobcat hunt. I didn't care about the hogs or bobcats, but the other hunters in camp had come to hunt hogs too. There were no hogs seen. When asked where the hogs were, the guides explained that they were there, but it was the wrong time of year to see them - yeah right! We saw one bobcat on the side of the road while driving back at night and he quickly stopped the truck and wanted us to shoot it. We didn't, and he chewed us out. Deer hunters beware, I only saw a few does while turkey hunting.
